Stener lesion

Also known as Stener's lesion

Displacement of the torn ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint proximal and superficial to the adductor aponeurosis, so that the aponeurosis lies between the ligament and its insertion and healing cannot occur without surgery. It accompanies most complete ruptures with marked valgus instability in extension; ultrasound (pooled sensitivity 95 per cent, specificity 94 per cent) is the first-line imaging test.
